About the practice

Established for over twenty years, Studio Sam Causer is an award-winning, RIBA-accredited Conservation Architecture practice specialising in adapting complex and sensitive situations.

They relish working in multi-layered historic environments, bringing a philosophical rigour to their interventions backed up with astute understanding of the way materials and humans behave in changing circumstances. Studio Sam Causer enjoys that each generation through time leaves an architectural legacy which speaks of available technologies, experiences and other cultural influences, and love how buildings and the environment grow and adapt accordingly. What comes now may not look or behave like what has gone before, but everything needs to work well together.

We visited Hawley Square in Margate with Sam Causer, to feature his 200-year-old Georgian townhouse - a home he's been quietly restoring since buying it in 2015. Sam walked us through every floor: from a basement bedroom carved out of damp brick, to a kitchen with a wonky hand-pressed concrete draining board, to rooms where six layers of wallpaper have simply been left to tell their own story. What was once a solicitor's storage facility — its history buried under metal shelving, moisture and decades of neglect — is now a rare example of what it looks like when a building is listened to rather than overwritten.
